If you want to do something about climate change…
Write a letter to the President of your college’s Board of Trustees.
Here’s a sample letter I wrote that you can use:
Dear President (Name),
Climate change is not only the great moral issue of our generation, but also a matter of survival. And divesting from fossil fuel companies is our best chance to provide a livable world for the current and future generations of (School) students.
The math is simple: The fossil fuel industry has five times as much carbon in its reserves as even the most conservative governments on earth say is safe to burn—but on the current course, it will be burned, causing catastrophic damage to the planet.
As a (School) alum, I would love to donate to my alma mater, but cannot in good conscience do so while it invests in the companies that are destroying our planet. I believe in (School)’s commitment to social justice, and I urge you, please do the right thing!
(your name) (your year of graduation)
